Washington, DC’s first mass timber commercial office building has opened at 80 M Street. The new mass timber structure is located atop the oldest high-rise building in DC’s Navy Yard neighborhood. The project used about 1,380 tons of mass timber.

The University of Washington is now the home of Founders Hall, the new location of the Foster School of Business. According to the project’s design architect LMN Architects, the 84,800 square foot mass timber building was designed to create a new hub for community, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

The National Veterans Resource Center, a first-of-its-kind facility, has opened on the campus of Syracuse University. Doubly curved cross-laminated timbers create a feature wall which wraps the exterior of the large central auditorium and forms a canopy over the 21,300 square foot space.

Nationwide, demand for mass timber has tripled between 2018 and 2019. For example, Michigan businesses searching for ways to reduce their carbon footprint are looking at mass timber panels instead of steel or concrete for their construction projects.

A BC government initiative has provided the impetus for the construction of 307 environmentally friendly, laminated wooden buildings in just BC alone. The total number of mass-timber wood buildings across the entire US is currently 356.

Rotterdam is now the home of a three-story building that has been constructed on a set of 15 ‘concrete barges’ that allow it to float on Rotterdam’s Rijnhaven, a former industrial harbor located on the Maas River.

The Zanzibar, Republic of Tanzania, will soon be home to the world’s tallest hybrid mass timber tower. The 28-story residential and commercial building will reach a height of 96 meters, or 315 feet. It will exceed the height of the current tallest hybrid building located in, Wisconsin.

The 80 M Street SE project, located in Washington, DC’s Navy Yard neighborhood, is the city’s first commercial office building to feature a vertical extension constructed using mass timber. It is also the first mass timber structure in DC to exceed 85 feet in height.

The Royal Park Canvas Hotel, located in downtown Sapporo on the island of Hokkaido, Japan, has recently been completed. The 11-story hybrid timber hotel was created by Mitsubishi Jisho Design for the real estate firm Mitsubishi Estate Group.
