Floating Office Building Located on Rotterdam’s Maas River Utilizes CLT

Rotterdam is now the home of a three-story building that has been constructed on a set of 15 ‘concrete barges’ that allow it to float on Rotterdam’s Rijnhaven, a former industrial harbor located on the Maas River.

The building opened in late 2021, has been dubbed the Floating Office Rotterdam, and accommodates the headquarters of the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), an organization exploring solutions for climate change, as well as the studio of the Dutch architecture firm—Powerhouse Company—that designed the building.

Its wooden structure, including cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor slabs, contributes to the building’s low carbon footprint and also insures it is light enough to float. Solar panels on the roof provide the building with its own source of electricity, while the surrounding harbor water is harnessed from a passive head and cooling system.
