Royal Park Canvas Hotel, the First Hybrid Timber High-Rise Hotel in Japan, Opens in Downtown Sapporo

The Royal Park Canvas Hotel, located in downtown Sapporo on the island of Hokkaido, Japan, has recently been completed. The 11-story hybrid timber hotel was created by Mitsubishi Jisho Design for the real estate firm Mitsubishi Estate Group.

According to the architects, the building is the first hybrid timber high-rise hotel to be built in Japan. It uses a combination of concrete and timber construction methods to achieve the desired height, while at the same time being in full compliance with Japan’s strict building standards in relations to fire and earthquake safety.

The eight-story hotel features a hybrid structure combining reinforced concrete and cross-laminated timber flooring, while the remaining three upper floors and roof are built entirely from wood. In keeping with Royal Park brand’s values of sustainability and supporting the local economy, the building used timbers mostly harvested in Hokkaido from mature plantation forests.
