European Panel Federation Releases Report on Strategic Wood Availability
Re-Balancing Europe’s Wood Resources
The European Panel Federation (EPF) has released a new policy paper, Strategic Wood Availability, addressing what it calls “the growing gap between strategic need and ecological reality,” Timber Trades Journal reported (11-21-25). The document is intended to elevate concerns about long-term raw material supply across Europe’s wood sector.
The EPF noted that ensuring a steady and secure stream of raw material will be one of the industry’s largest challenges in the years ahead, particularly as demand for wood-based products continues to increase. With many variables influencing timber availability, the federation said it is essential for the sector to understand the issue and advocate effectively to ensure adequate supply in future decades.
Because wood-based panels are central to construction, furniture, and design—and carry a strong sustainability profile—the EPF stressed that supportive policies will be necessary for the industry to thrive.
EPF technical director Kris Wijnendaele emphasized the importance of the new paper when presenting it to members at the federation’s annual general meeting in Berlin.
