Scotland’s Fife College Using CLT/Steel Hybrid Construction to Meet Carbon Targets

Located in Dunfermline, Scotland, Fife College’s new campus is being built to meet the government’s carbon targets by using a unique steel/timber hybrid construction method, according to a feature by Project Scotland (9-26-23).

The scale of the new campus, which is being built by Balfour Beatty, means that the green approach will save 25% of the embodied carbon normally expected in a structure of this size. Cross laminated timber (CLT) is being utilized on the campus, which is due to open in 2025, as well as 95% recycled steel beams to achieve carbon saving.

According to Project Scotland, the new campus was designed with the help of structural engineer Woolgar Hunter. Malcom Buchannan, director at Woolgar Hunter said, “By implementing these sustainability measures, such as the CLT/steel hybrid construction design, we are very confident that this building, which is an ambitious building and an ambitious architectural design, can hit Scottish government carbon targets.”
