Sweden’s Derome Inaugurates New Sawmill Line

The Derome Group, one of Sweden’s largest family-owned wood companies, recently inaugurated a new line at its sawmill in Derome, Sweden. The investment of SEK 600 million (US$61.8 million) supports more sustainable and competitive construction using wood.

An extensive modernization and expansion project has been underway at the sawmill since 2022. Almost the entire facility has been affected by the project, from timber intake to raw sorting.

The town of Derome has been the hub of Derome’s operations since its inception in 1946. Here, Karl Andersson founded the village sawmill, which over time has developed into a modern wood industry with operations throughout the entire value chain, from forest to finished house. The sawmill still stands on the same site and, after the latest investment, is one of the most modern in the world.

Commenting on the announcement, Derome Timber CEO Linda Andersson said (translated):

“The core of the investment in the new sawmill line is that we can increase yield, i.e. increase the proportion of the log that becomes construction timber. This means that we make better use of the sustainable forest raw material. If everyone in Sweden sawed each log uniquely in the way we do in Derome, we could build 30,000 more wooden houses with the same amount of raw material.”
