US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for the Week Ending May 3rd

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that as of Friday, May 3rd, 8 new large wildfires were reported during the week. Currently, 3 large uncontained wildfires are burning in California, Florida, and Oregon.

During the week, wildland firefighters and support personnel contained 9 large fires. The National Preparedness Level remains at a 1 out of 5.

Currently, there are 2,000 acres actively involved fires.

The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:

  • Year-to-date through May 3rd, 12,693 wildfires were reported, and they have burned 1,833,012 acres.
  • During the same period last year, 14,119 wildfires were reported, and they burned 428,506 acres.
  • The 10-year average (2014–23) for the same period is 16,750 wildfires and 800,104 acres burned. The above-average number of acres is due to the wildfires in Texas in late February.
