US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update as of September 30th

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that as of Monday, September 30th, 30 large active wildfires are being managed with full suppression strategies nationwide. Current wildfires have burned 1,580,407 acres.

The National Wildfire Preparedness Level has been reduced to a 3 out of 5. Approximately 9,905 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents, including 12 complex incident management teams, 176 crews, 430 engines, and 57 helicopters. Three complex incident management teams have been mobilized in Florida and Alabama in the wake of Hurricane Helene.

Daily Statistics

As of Monday, there were 4 large new fires, and in total there are 30 active large wildfires that have burned 1,580,407 acres in 10 states. Oregon is reporting the most wildfires with 9, followed by Idaho with 8; Ariona, California, and Wyoming with 3 each; and Colorado, Nevada, South Dakota, Utah, and Washington with 1 each. No active fires are contained.

The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:

  • Year-to-date through September 30th, 38,673 wildfires were reported, and they have burned 7,916,913 acres.
  • During the same period last year, 44,815 wildfires were reported, and they had burned 2,460,770 acres.
  • The 10-year average (2014–23) for the same period is 46,194 wildfires and 6,032,936 acres burned.

As of this week, NIFC is no longer reporting delays in reconciling actual acreage burned with entries into reporting systems.
