US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update as of April 25

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that in the week ending Friday, April 25, 26 large new fires were reported. Large fire activity picked up in the Eastern area and continues in the Southern, Northern Rockies, and Rocky Mountain areas.

Wildland firefighters and support personnel contained 24 large fires. The National Fire Preparedness Level remains at a 1 out of 5. However, the NIFC is reporting that fire managers across the country are preparing for what could be an active fire year.

Daily Statistics

As of Friday, there were a total of 26 large new wildfires burning, with 11 being fought under full suppression strategies. Florida is reporting three wildfires, while Minnesota, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania each report two, and Nebraska and North Carolina each report one. A total of 64,619 acres are burning, with 24 of the 26 wildfires partially contained.

The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:

  • Year-to-date through April 25, 21,194 wildfires have been reported, and they have burned 973,830 acres.
  • During the same period last year, 11,705 wildfires were reported, and they had burned 1,804,950 acres.
  • The 10-year average (2015–24) for the same time period is 14,413 wildfires and 898,011 acres burned.
