Georgia-Pacific to Close Cedar Springs Containerboard Mill
On Wednesday, Georgia-Pacific (GP) notified employees at its Cedar Springs containerboard mill in Georgia that it plans to permanently close the facility later this year. Most positions will be eliminated by August 1, and all 535 jobs at the mill will eventually be affected.
GP cited a range of factors behind the decision, ultimately concluding that the mill cannot competitively serve its customers over the long term. The company emphasized that the decision is not a reflection on the quality of work performed by employees at the Cedar Springs mill.
Production will continue for a limited time as the site fulfills existing customer commitments.
In the weeks and months ahead, GP said it will focus on operating safely while supporting employees through the transition. The company is committed to treating all Cedar Springs employees with dignity and respect and will work with them to provide access to local support services and job placement resources, including available opportunities within Georgia-Pacific or other Koch companies.
