Out-of-Control Wildfires in Alberta Prompt State of Emergency

Alberta’s Premier Danielle Smith told a news conference on Saturday that after a meeting with her government’s emergency management committee, the province has declared a state of emergency “to protect safety, health, and welfare of Albertan’s,” according to ABC News. The declaration gives the government “greater powers to respond to extreme situations,” she said, including mobilizing additional resources and unlocking emergency funds.

Wildfires continue to flare up across the province forcing 25,000 people to flee their homes, and thousands more have been told to be prepared to leave on a moment’s notice, as the number of fires—fanned by strong winds—jumped to 110. Citing Ms. Smith, ABC News says more than 20 communities have been evacuated and at least 122,000 hectares (301,469 acres) have burned so far.

One-third of the 110 blazes were listed as out of control.
