The BC Wildfire Service responded to 1,688 wildfires between April 1, 2024, and the end of the year, CKPG Today reported (12-29-24). These fires burned a little over a million hectares (2.47 million acres) of land across the province.
Most of the land burned—810,876 hectares (2.0 million acres)—was in the Prince George Fire Center, where there was a total of 449 wildfires, 27 of which are still active but under control.
According to the Ministry of Forests, over 70% of the wildfires in BC this season were sparked by lightning, with a little under 30% caused by human activity.
The province issued 51 evacuation orders that impacted more than 4,100 properties across BC. It also issued 112 evacuation alerts that affected over 11,600 properties.
The 2024 wildfire season was the fourth worst on record, trailing only the 2023, 2018, and 2017 fire seasons.
