BC Announces Forestry Support Grants for Workers

On Thursday, British Columbia announced a CA$20.8 million investment to support forestry workers, employers, and communities through a targeted grant program aimed at workforce retention and job creation.

The funding, to be delivered through the Northern Development Initiative Trust, is expected to support approximately 1,400 forestry workers. The program is designed to help the sector respond to ongoing disruptions by funding re-employment, skills training, and local job creation initiatives.

The grant will support rapid re-employment and skills training, wage subsidies and workforce-stabilization supports, and community-led projects. It also allows for land-based and operational contracts through BC Bid, with the ability to stack funding for training and wage support.

The program is not limited to Crown land or BC Bid opportunities, enabling broader access for contractors, businesses, and workers across local and regional markets. The initiative draws on elements of the previous Forest Employment Program to support continued employment and retention in the sector.
