France Promotes Sustainable Urban Development

Starting in 2022, as part of the French governments move towards sustainable urban development, all new public buildings financed by state funding must contain at minimum 50% wood products. The City of Paris, has pledged that wood will be a main building component for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. In fact, all Olympic building up to 8-stories high must be of all-timber construction. The City of Bordeaux will soon be the home of France’s tallest all-timber construction with the 16-story building named the Hyperion, where concrete will be the core for the elevator shafts and stairs, but they will be surrounded by wooden post-and-beam structures, with floors and walls constructed of cross-laminated timbers (CLT).
