Bloomington Development Turns to Mass Timber for Two Industrial Buildings in Ontario
Mass timber takes root in two Sudbury industrial builds
Bloomington Development is building two mass timber industrial buildings in Sudbury, Ontario, according to a feature by Daily Commerical News (5-12-25).
The larger project is a 48,000-square-foot, two-story industrial/commercial building made of cross-laminated timber (CLT), scheduled for completion by year-end. A smaller CLT building at Herold Industrial Park is set to open in June.
“It’s definitely new to see mass timber in the industrial sector here, and I don’t think it’s common across Canada,” said Patrick Danielson, principal at Danielson Architectural Office Inc. in Sudbury. While the larger building will feature a Canadian-sourced insulated steel panel cladding system, its interior will primarily showcase exposed CLT.
Originally specified in steel, both buildings were redesigned in CLT after pandemic-related price spikes and supply issues. A cold call to Montreal-based Nordic Structures led to a collaboration, with Nordic supplying the CLT and engineering services.
Tergos Architecture + Construction of Quebec is the erections contractor. Bloomington Developments will operate both CLT buildings upon completion.
