Exports of Southern Pine Lumber Up 20% Year-Over-Year in First Half of 2024

According to data recently released by the USDA’s Foreign Agriculture Services’ Global Agricultural Trade System, exports of Southern pine lumber (both treated and untreated) are running 20% ahead of 2023 through the first half of 2024, the SFPA reported.

Southern pine lumber exports were up 16% in Q2 when compared to Q1 and up 22% over the same period in 2023. Exports were up 45.8% year-over-year in June but down 7.5% from May, when exports reached a three-year high. Meanwhile, softwood imports were nearly flat in June over 2023, but down 2% from May.

Mexico remains the largest, by volume, export market for Southern pine and SYP treated lumber—up 47% when compared to the first half of 2023, with 82.5 Mbf of imports. The Dominican Republic is the second largest importer of SYP and is running 29% ahead of the same period last year, with 54.1 Mbf of imports. Exports to China, on the other hand, are down 58% YTD when compared to 2023, with only 7.3 Mbf imported.
