University of Pennsylvania Unveils East Coast’s Tallest Mass Timber Academic Building

The University of Pennsylvania has opened Amy Gutmann Hall, a six-story, 116,000-square-foot facility that now stands as the tallest mass timber academic building on the East Coast, i+s reported (10-7-25).

Designed by Lake Flato in partnership with KSS Architects, the new home of Penn Engineering’s data science program serves as a cross-disciplinary hub focused on artificial intelligence research and the power of data. The structure is targeting LEED Gold certification and achieves a 52% lower carbon footprint than a comparable concrete building and 41% lower than steel.

“By utilizing mass timber, we’ve created a space that not only reduces environmental impact, but also provides a warm, inviting atmosphere conducive to interdisciplinary research and learning,” said Andrew Herdeg, FAIA, Partner at Lake Flato.

Inside, flexible workspaces, laboratories, and collaboration areas are arranged around a light-filled central atrium. Exposed wood and stone, along with a green wall and other natural elements, reinforce the university’s sustainability goals and the building’s emphasis on connection.
