Michigan Department of Natural Resources Opens New Mass Timber Center

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently opened its new Customer Service Center in Newberry, UPword Michigan reported (5-14-25).

The 10,000-square-foot facility is constructed from mass timber using locally sourced Michigan red pine, making it the state’s first mass timber building built with Michigan wood. The use of mass timber supports low-carbon construction and showcases the potential of regional species in modern building systems.

When groundbreaking for the DNR building occurred in 2024, there were five buildings in Michigan either built or being built with mass timber—today, there are 60.

The center also serves as an office for DNR staff from all divisions, including forestry, fire, wildlife, fisheries, parks and recreation, and conservation. It will also host public meetings on DNR-related issues and provides services such as license and permit sales and general inquiries from the public.
