Paper Excellence Begins Shutting Down Its Crofton, BC, Pulp Mill After Union’s Strike Notice

On Friday (10-21-22), Paper Excellence announced that it has started the controlled and orderly process of shutting down its pulp mill located in Crofton, BC.

According to the company, it has been in contract negotiations with Public and Private Workers of Canada (PPWC) Local 2 since July 2022. Those negotiations have reached an impasse, and the company’s request for mediation has been rejected by the union. The union has since served the company with a 72-hour strike notice which, in turn, has prompted the shutdown of the pulp mill.

Earlier in the month, Paper Excellence announced that it would indefinitely shut down its paper mill located in Crofton, BC, in December due to declining markets and prices for traditional paper products. At that time, the company said it intended to maintain its pulp operation.

A statement released the company said that “Paper Excellence hopes for a speedy return to discussions and the restart of the Crofton Facility.”
