North American Rail Traffic Report for the Week Ending September 30th
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported on Wednesday (10-4-23) that total US weekly rail traffic was 500,154 carloads and intermodal units during the week ending September 30th, an increase of 2.8% compared with the same week last year.
Total carloads amounted to 235,988, up 3.7% year-over-year, while weekly intermodal volume was 264,166 containers and trailers, up 2.0% year-over-year. The AAR reports that 9 of the 10 carload commodity groups posted a year-over-year increase.
Across 10 reporting US, Canadian, and Mexican railroads, North American rail volume for the week ending September 30th totaled 350,483 carloads, up 3.6% year-over-year, and 346,771 intermodal units, down 1.5% year-over-year.
Total North American volume recorded during the first 39 weeks of 2023 was 25,361,005 carloads and intermodal units—down 3.8% compared with the first 39 weeks of 2022. Canadian railroads reported cumulative rail traffic volume for the first 39 weeks of 2023 of 6,175,243 carloads, containers, and trailers—a decrease of 3.4%.
