US Weekly Jobless Claims Increase in the Week Ending September 30th

The US Department of Labor reported on Thursday (10-5-23) that the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 207,000 during the week ending Saturday, September 30th. This is an increase of 2,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 205,000 (originally reported as 204,000). The 4-week moving average was 208,750—a decrease of 2,500 from the previous week’s revised average of 211,250 (originally reported as 211,000).

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment, known as continuing claims, during the week ending September 23rd was 1,664,000. This is a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 1,665,000 (originally reported as 1,670,000). The 4-week moving average was 1,667,500—a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 1,672,500 (originally reported as 1,673,750).

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.1% for the week ending September 23rd, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate.
