Canadian Pacific Railway Threatens to Lock Out Employees in Ongoing Labor Dispute
Canadian Pacific Railway Threatens Lockout in Labor Dispute
The Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) has threatened to lock out employees starting on March 20, 2022, if the union representing train conductors and engineers fails to negotiate a new contract or agree to binding arbitration.
CP has been in contract discussions/mediation with the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) since September 2021. The TCRC represents over 3000 CP employees. The TCRC is seeking a number of wage, pension, and benefit improvements.
Commenting on the potential of an employee lock out, Canadian Pacific’s chief executive Keith Creel said, the lockout was called in an effort to reach an agreement with the union and to end uncertainty for suppliers and consumers.
“The world has never needed Canada’s resources and an efficient transportation system to deliver them more than it does today,” Mr. Creel added.
A TCRC spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment.
