US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for the Week Ending September 29th

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) is reporting that as of Friday, September 29th, 32 large wildfires have burned more than 365,438 acres in 9 states. Two new large wildfires were reported on Thursday—one in Colorado and one in Utah.

Approximately 5,200 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the nation. This includes 98 crews, 213 engines, 42 helicopters, and 9 incident management teams. The National Preparedness Level has been lowered to a 2 out of 5.

The number of new large fires or emergency responses as September 29th was 2. The number of active large fires stands at 32 (not including individual fires within complexes). There are currently 365,438 acres actively involved fires. The total number of wildfires contained stands at 2.

States currently reporting large fires are Oregon with 12; California with 6; Washington and Utah with 3 each; Arizona, Louisiana, and Montana with 2 each; and Colorado and Idaho with 1 each.

The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:

  • Year-to-date through September 29th, 44,195 wildfires have been reported and they have burned 2,442,088 acres.
  • During the same period last year, 53,605 wildfires were reported and they had burned 6,885,264 acres.
  • The 10-year average (2013–22) for the same period is 45,514 wildfires and 6,181,730 acres burned.
