US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for the Week Ending May 10th

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that as of Friday, May 10th, 5 new large wildfires were reported during the past week. Currently, 5 large uncontained wildfires are burning in Arizona, Florida, and Mississippi. One large uncontained fire is burning under a strategy other than full suppression in Oregon.

During the week, wildland firefighters and support personnel contained 2 large fires. The National Preparedness Level remains at a 1 out of 5.

The number of active large fires (not including individual fires within complexes) stands at 6. Currently, there are 8,965 acres actively involved in fires. The states reporting large fires are Arizona with 3 and Florida, Mississippi, and Oregon with 1 each.

The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:

  • Year-to-date through May 10th, 13,422 wildfires were reported, and they have burned 1,842,578 acres.
  • During the same period last year, 14,799 wildfires were reported, and they had burned 458,078 acres.
  • The 10-year average (2014–23) for the same period is 18,212 wildfires and 858,122 acres burned. The above-average number of acres is due to the wildfires in Texas in late February.
