US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for the Week Ending July 7th

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) is reporting that as of Friday, June 7th, 18 large wildfires have burned 125,235 acres in six states. Nationally, three large new wildfires have been reported over the past 7 days. Since January 1st, 25,163 wildfires have burned 702,608 acres across the US. The National Preparedness Level is currently at a 2 out of 5.

The National Interagency Coordination Center (NICC) located at the NIFC reports that since May 8th, the US has mobilized a total of 1,473 personnel via the CIFFC to Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and the CIFFC, which includes: fire suppression crews (1,129 personnel); 91 individual overhead, 92 smokejumpers; and 8 spotters; and 12 incident management teams (153 personnel).

The number of large new fires or emergency responses as of June 7th was 3. The number of active large fires (not including individual fires within complexes) stands at 18. The total number of wildfires contained stands at 2. The states currently reporting large wildfires are Arizona with 9; Colorado and New Mexico with 3 each; and California, Florida, and Washington with 1 each.

The NIFC offers the following year-to-date comparison:

  • From 1/1/23 through 7/7/23, 25,163 wildfires have burned 702,608 acres.
  • From 1/1/22 through 7/22/22, 32,058 wildfires had burned 4,685,808 acres.
  • The 10-year average (2013–22) for the same period is 28,459 wildfires and 2,339,013 acres burned.

Dry and windy conditions will continue across parts of southeast California, the southern Great Basin, western Colorado, and northern portions of the Southwest leading to elevated and critical fire weather conditions.
