US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for the Week Ending July 28th

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) is reporting that as of Friday, June 28th, 52 large wildfires have burned 243,894 acres in nine states. Nine large new wildfires were reported on Thursday alone. Currently more than 8,600 wildland firefighters and support personnel have been deployed to incidents across the country. The National Preparedness Level remains at a 3 out of 5.
In addition, the National Interagency Coordination Center (NICC) located at the NIFC reports that since May 8th, the US has mobilized a total of 2,231 personnel via the CIFFC/National Interagency Fire Center to Canada and the CIFFC, which includes: 73 fire suppression crews (1,511 personnel), 215 individual overhead, 119 smokejumpers, 11 smokejumper spotters, and 2 helicopters with 29 rappelers; 20 engines (91 personnel); and 22 incident management teams (255 personnel).
The number of large new fires or emergency responses as of Friday, July 28th was nine. The number of active large fires (not including individual fires within complexes) stands at 52. The total number of fires contained currently stands at 3. The states reporting large wildfires this week are Arizona and New Mexico with 11 each; Alaska and Oregon with 5 each; California, Idaho, and Texas with 4 each; Colorado, Montana and Wyoming with 2 each; and Utah and Washington with 1 each.
The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:
- From 1/1/23 through 7/28/23, 29,516 wildfires have been reported and they have burned 968,795 acres.
- From 1/1/22 through 7/28/22, 18,879 wildfires had been reported and they had burned 5,626,071 acres.
- The 10-year average (2013–22) for the same period is 33,228 wildfires and 3,567,947 acres burned.
