US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for the Week Ending April 26th

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that as of Friday, April 26th, 10 new large wildfires were reported during the week. Currently, 4 large uncontained wildfires are burning in Arizona, Colorado, and Virigina. During the week, wildland firefighters and support personnel contained 9 large fires.

The National Preparedness Level remains at a 1 out of 5.

Currently, there are 3,940 acres actively involved in fires. The state-by-state fire breakdown is Arizona with 2 and Colorado and Virgina with 1 each.

The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:

  • Year-to-date through April 26th, 11,523 wildfires were reported, and they have burned 1,802,756 acres.
  • During the same period last year, 12,674 wildfires were reported, and they burned 389,475 acres.
  • The 10-year average (2014–23) for the same period is 15,258 wildfires and 751,602 acres burned. The above-average number of acres is due to the wildfires in Texas in late February.
