US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update as of Monday October 21st

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that as of Monday, October 21st, wildland fire activity continues in 11 states where 30 large active wildfires have burned 1,117,707 acres.

The National Fire Preparedness Level has been lowered to a 4 out of 5. Nearly 7,400 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents, including 9 complex incident management teams, 141 crews, 361 engines, and 84 helicopters. Two Canadian crews are assisting with suppression efforts in the Great Basin area.

In addition, wildland firefighters, two complex incident management teams, and support personnel continue to assist with hurricane relief efforts in North Carolina.

As of Monday, there were 3 large new fires being reported, and in total there are 30 active large wildfires that have burned 1,117,707 acres in 11 states. Idaho has 9 wildfires; Oregon has 7; Montana has 5; California has 4; Oklahoma has 3; Minnesota, Mississippi, Utah, and Wyoming have 2 each; and Michigan and South Dakota have 1 each.

The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:

  • Year-to-date through October 21st, 43,337 wildfires were reported, and they have burned 7,925,103 acres.
  • During the same period last year, 48,212 wildfires were reported, and they had burned 2,509,448 acres.
  • The 10-year average (2014–23) for the same period is 49,006 wildfires and 6,056,582 acres burned.
