National Fire News: May 2, 2025
The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that in the week ending May 2, 9 new fires were reported.
A total of 848 firefighters and support personnel are assigned to these incidents. The National Fire Preparedness Level remains at a 1 out of 5.
According to the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for April–July, significant wildfire potential is expected throughout parts of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and several southeastern states.

As of Friday, there were a total of 9 large new wildfires burning, with all being fought under full suppression strategies. There are a total of 31,792 acres burning, with 7 of the 9 wildfires partially contained.
There are currently two wildfires burning in Florida and North Carolina, with one each in Arizona, New Jersey, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:
- Year-to-date through May 2, 22,759 wildfires have been reported, and they have burned 988,319 acres.
- During the same period last year, 8,265 wildfires were reported, and they had burned 1,834,035 acres.
- The 10-year average (2015–24) for the same time period is 15,764 wildfires and 939,503 acres burned.
