US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update as of August 5th

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that as of Monday, August 5th, 85 large active wildfires are being managed with full suppression strategies. Wildfires have burned 2,185,273 acres nationwide.

Nearly 30,000 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to wildfires, including 24 complex and 4 Type 1 incident management teams, 652 crews, 1,717 engines, 180 helicopters, and six Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems. The National Wildfire Preparedness Level remains at a 5 out of 5.

On August 1st, predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for August through November.

A new fuels and fire behavior advisory has been issued for Colorado’s Front Range and Eastern Wyoming. There are already advisories in place for Southwest Oregon, the region east of the Cascades in Oregon and Washington, Nevada, Southern Idaho, Utah, and California.

As of Monday, there 2 large new fires. In total, 85 active large wildfires have burned 2,185,273 acres in 11 states. Oregon has 25 wildfires; California and Idaho have 10 each; Montana and Washington have 7 each; Wyoming has 5; Arizona, Colorado, and Utah have 3 each; Nevada has 2; and New Mexico has 1.

The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:

  • Year-to-date through August 5th, 29,132 wildfires were reported, and they have burned 4,678,064 acres.
  • During the same period last year, 31,718 wildfires were reported, and they had burned 1,295,196 acres.
  • The 10-year average (2014–23) for the same period is 35,691 wildfires and 3,838,812 acres burned.
