US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update as of August 12th

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that as of Monday, August 12th, 78 large wildfires are being managed with full suppression strategies. Current wildfires have burned 2,404,053 acres. Evacuation orders are in effect for 17 fires.

There are approximately 27,200 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to wildfires, including 22 complex and 5 Type 1 incident management teams, 610 crews, 1,475 engines, 169 helicopters, and six Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems. The National Wildfire Preparedness Level remains at a 5 out of 5.

Fire managers in California and parts of Oregon and the Great Basin are preparing for very dry air and areas of westerly winds that could cause existing large fires to burn actively over the next couple days.

As of Monday, there 4 large new fires, and in total there are 78 active large wildfires that have burned 2,404,053 acres in 11 states. Oregon has 23 wildfires; Idaho has 14; Washington has 9; California has 8; Arizona has 7; Montana has 4; Colorado, Florida, Nevada, and Wyoming have 2 each; and Texas has 1. Only 2 fires are being reported as contained.

The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:

  • Year-to-date through August 12, 29,313 wildfires were reported, and they have burned 5,211,246 acres.
  • During the same period last year, 34,045 wildfires were reported, and they had burned 1,620,861 acres.
  • The 10-year average (2014–23) for the same period is 37,156 wildfires and 4,156,200 acres burned.
