U.S. National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update – as of Monday 1st July 2024

The U.S. National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) provided an update on Monday (7-1-24), reporting that nationwide, there are currently 22 large fires being managed under full suppression strategies, and 37 large fires being managed under strategies other than full suppression. Seven complex incident management teams and one type 1 incident management team have been assigned or are currently mobilizing to incidents. Approximately 8,000 firefighters and support personnel are assigned nationwide. The National Preparedness level as of June 28th has been raised to a level 3 out of 5.

As of Monday, 34 active large wildfires have burned 174,507 acres in 10 states. Fifteen wildfires are burning in Alaska, 4-each in California and New Mexico, 2-each in Arizona, Oregon, Utah, and Washington, and 1-each in Colorado, Florida and North Carolina. The total number of wildfires fires contained currently stands at 2.

The NIFC provided these comparative statistics:

  • Between 1-1-24 through 7-1-24 – 21,363 wildfires were reported, and they have burned 2,468,952 acres.
  • Between 1-1-23 through 7-1-24 – 23,986 wildfires were reported, and they had burned 677,301 acres.
