World’s Tallest Wood Turbine Being Constructed in Skara, Sweden

Modvion, a Swedish startup, is currently building the world’s tallest wooden turbine, according to a report by The Next Web (7-31-23). The company says the project is on track for completion this year.

When complete the tower will be 105 meters (345 feet) tall and is being built for local energy utility Varberg Enrgi for its wind power site near the town of Skara in western Sweden.

A 2-megawatt turbine made by Danish wind giant Vestas will be mounted atop the wooden tower. Once the turbine is setup and running it has the potential of supplying power to approximately 500 homes.

The towers are made from laminated veneer lumber, produced by gluing several massive layers of wood together. Modvion says that the material has higher strength per weight than steel and is also 30% lighter. Modvion has completed the construction of the large wooden sections of the tower at its Gothenburg factory and is currently in the process of assembling the structure on site.
