Western Washington University’s New Hall Targets Zero Carbon and Zero Energy Certification
According to Contruction Dive (5-25-23), Western Washington University (WWU), located in Bellingham, Washington, and Minneapolis-based Mortenson Construction announced on Monday that ground was broken on the new $73.6 million Kaiser Borsari Hall on WWU’s campus. The building was designed by Perkins & Will.
The future electrical and computer engineering, energy science, and computer science facility will be the first publicly funded, zero-energy building on a university campus in Washington state, according to a release shared with Construction Dive.
Construction Dive reports that the four story, 54,000-square-foot facility targets zero carbon and zero energy certifications through the International Living Future Institute. Combining green building guidelines with a mass timber/cross-laminated timber structure will reduce the environmental impact of the project, Mortenson claims.
The building is scheduled to be completed in early 2025.
