Michigan Department of Natural Resources to Build New Customer Service Center Using Mass Timber

The Newberry News is reporting (10-23-23) that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will construct a new customer service center in Newberry, Michigan. The building was designed by Detroit’s Lord Aeck Sargent and is being built by Walbridge.

The facility will also be a showcase for one of Michigan’s top industries, as forestry and timber products will be used in an innovative way to help lower the building’s carbon footprint. The new multi-million-dollar customer service center will be the first to use Michigan-sourced red pine in cross laminated timber (CLT) panels.

Commenting on the project, Natural Resource Deputy Shannon Loft told The Newberry News that “The wood will be sent to the State of Washington where the panels will be created and those will be shipped back here when they are ready to erect the panels.”

The new building is anticipated to be completed in October 2024. Once the structure is finished, the DNR intends to install informational kiosks detailing mass timber construction and the forest industry.
