Tolko Announces 30-Day Curtailment at Its Soda Creek Sawmill in Williams Lake, BC

On Tuesday, The Williams Lake Tribune reported that Tolko Industries Communications Advisor Chris Downey confirmed that starting Monday, September 30th, the Soda Creek Division mill in Williams Lake, BC, will begin a 30-day shutdown.

Downey cited challenging lumber markets, increased US tariffs, and the availability of economic fiber in the province as reasons for Tolko taking the downtime at Soda Creek.

Downey said the planer will continue to operate for an estimated two more weeks after the Soda Creek sawmill stops producing in order to process inventory.

“This is not ideal,” he said, adding the downtime will impact an estimated 50 workers. “We recognize the impact this has on our workforce, and we would always rather be fully operational. This is a business decision that in no way reflects upon the commitment of the people who work at Soda Creek—it is being made to ensure our operations are sustainable for the future.”

This announcement comes less than a week after Tolko began a two-week shutdown of a mill in Armstrong, BC, from September 16th until October 1st.
