Canfor Board Scheduled to Decide Fate of Houston, BC, Sawmill Facility on July 27th

According to reporting by Houston Today (7-19-23), the 12 Canfor Corporation board members responsible for its lumber operations are scheduled to make their decision on the future of the Houston, BC, lumber facility on Thursday, July 27th.

“We expect to provide an update on the Houston rebuild following the July 27 board meeting,” Michelle Ward, a Canfor Corp. communications official, told Houston Today.

Based on available information, Canfor’s plan, if accepted by the board, is to build a new mill aimed at producing high value products with the facility able to withstand the ups and downs of lumber markets. The company is also involving the BC’s government in the decision as it relates to a steady supply of fiber for any new facility.

At the same time, Canfor has dismissed direct provincial financial assistance that would be seen as a subsidy and further aggravate softwood lumber trade with the US. However, Canfor is encouraging a greater involvement with First Nations in acquiring a wood supply and the ability to sell it.

Based on past practice, Canfor typically releases information after the Toronto Stock Exchange closes at 2:00 PM Pacific time, Houston Today said.
