Arbec’s Lumber Mill in Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec, to Suspended Sawmilling Through End of May

According to a report by Le Journal de Québec (5-8-23), Remabec, the parent company and owner of the Arbec lumber mill located in Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec, announced last Friday that it was suspending sawmilling activities at the facility until the end of May. The company cited increasingly high stumpage fees for logs and the distance between the harvested fiber and the sawmill facility. Remabec says the issues are beyond their control and can only be solved by the Government of Quebec.

According to the report, drying and planning will continue for now. However, when the plant restarts in June, all of the operations will follow the same rhythm. The plant will only operate 24 hours a week, working two 12-hour shifts on Tuesday and Wednesday on a shared-time basis until September. The situation will then be reassessed. 142 jobs are being affected by the curtailment.
