Södra Supplying CLT for Gothenburg Grand Central in Sweden

Construction has begun on Gothenburg Grand Central in Gothenburg, Sweden. Södra, in partnership with Hybridge, announced that it is supplying 9,100 square meters of CLT for the building’s frame.

The structure is primarily made of wood, complemented by recycled bricks, climate-improved concrete, and recycled steel. It will span nearly 120 meters (394 feet) in length and rise more than 20 meters (65 feet) high. The interior will showcase exposed wood in various forms, emphasizing sustainable design.

Oslo-based Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter is the project’s architect, with PEAB serving as the general contractor and KL projekt handling assembly with Södra. The building is owned and will be managed by Jernhusen.

Groundbreaking took place in September, and Södra’s CLT deliveries will begin in Q1. The station building is set for completion in December 2026, with the upper floors following in early 2027.

Commenting on the project, Andreas Berge, area business manager for Södra, said:

“We are very proud to deliver our renewable and locally produced CLT to Gothenburg’s new station building. Using wood as a building material with low climate impact significantly reduces the carbon dioxide emissions associated with the building. Additionally, the wood continues to store carbon dioxide throughout the building’s lifetime. Wood as a natural material also provides a pleasant environment to be in.”
