Modvion Unveils Wooden Wind Turbine Tower for Largest Onshore Turbines

Modvion, a Swedish wood technology company, recently announced its new wooden wind turbine tower, engineered for the largest onshore wind turbines. The tower has been given third party approval and will now be adapted for series production.

The new tower is designed to support a V162 – 6.4MW turbine from the Vestas Enventus platform with 35 years lifetime. The tower design has been evaluated by the independent certification body TÜV SÜD and received a design evaluation conformity statement.

The tower was designed to demonstrate that Modvion’s wind turbine tower technology can be scaled up for the most powerful wind turbines onshore. Now the company is focusing on adapting the design for series production where they will produce towers with hub heights up to 219 meters.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Modvion CEO Otto Lundman said:

“Having this stamp of approval for one of the largest onshore turbines available is a great leap forward. Our modular wind turbine towers dramatically reduce CO2 emissions by replacing steel and concrete with wood, whilst enabling highly efficient, taller installations without transport bottlenecks.”
