USMCA Talks Unlikely to Meet July 1 Deadline, US Trade Representative Says

On Tuesday, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said negotiations on the US–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) are not expected to be resolved by the July 1 deadline, The Canadian Press reported (4-7-26).

The deadline requires the US to notify Canada and Mexico of its intentions regarding the trilateral trade pact.

The agreement’s review process presents three options for member countries. They can renew the deal for another 16 years, withdraw from it, or signal both non-renewal and non-withdrawal, which would trigger annual reviews and extend negotiations for up to a decade.

Speaking at the Hudson Institute in Washington, Greer said the Trump administration aims to resolve trade issues quickly but is unlikely to finalize the agreement by July. Formal negotiations with Mexico began last month, while talks between the US and Canada have yet to begin.
