Freight Railroad Strike Averted

The US Senate this afternoon (12-1-22) passed legislation, 80 to 15, that will avert a nationwide Class 1 freight railroad strike that was scheduled to begin at 12:01 AM on Friday, December 9th. The bill will impose the deal reached by the railroads and union leaders in September, which four of twelve unions later rejected during ratification.

The Senate’s approval comes just one day after the House of Representatives passed the measure. The bill is now headed to President Joe Biden, and he has already said he will sign it into law.

The bill does not include the sick leave provision that union members were hoping for. Sick leave was a major sticking point during the long-running negotiations and a widely cited reason among those voting to reject the tentative agreement.
