British Columbia Premier Open to Limits on Softwood Lumber Exports

Canada is open to discussing limits on softwood lumber exports to the US to help ease trade tensions, British Columbia Premier David Eby told Bloomberg News, according to Reuters (7-16-25).

“One of the asks for years out of the American coalition has been a quota—that there’s a fixed amount of lumber that gets to come from Canada,” Eby told Bloomberg News. “And I think that, for the first time, there’s some willingness to have a conversation about what that could look like.”

The US Lumber Coalition believes it is critical for the US to continue enforcing its trade laws. In response to Eby’s comments, Zoltan van Heyningen, Executive Director of the US Lumber Coalition, said:

“Canada does not simply get to choose whether or not it is subject to our trade laws. Antidumping and anti-subsidy duties are set to rise because the US Department of Commerce has once again confirmed that Canadian lumber producers engaged in egregious and harmful unfair trade practices.”
