US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for the Week Ending July 14th
National Fire News: July 14, 2023
The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) is reporting that as of Friday, July 14th, 23 large wildfires have burned 127,584 acres in nine states. Three large new wildfires were reported. Since January 1st, 26,625 wildfires have burned 749,994 acres across the US. The National Preparedness Level is currently at a 2 out of 5.
The National Interagency Coordination Center (NICC) located at the NIFC reports that since May 8th, the US has mobilized a total of 1,898 personnel to Canada including: fire suppression crews (1,366 personnel), 184 individual overhead, 119 smokejumpers, and 11 smokejumper spotters, and 14 incident management teams (218 personnel).
The number of active large fires (not including individual fires within complexes) stands at 23. The total number of fires contained stands at 2. The states currently reporting large wildfires are Arizona with 6, New Mexico with 4, Idaho and Oregon with 3 each, Colorado and California with 2 each, and Michigan, Texas, and Washington with 1 each.
The NIFC offers the following year-to-date comparison:
- From 1/1/23 through 7/14/23, 26,625 wildfires have been reported and they have burned 749,994 acres.
- From1/1/22 through 7/14/22, 17,467 wildfires had been reported and they had burned 5,179,043 acres.
- The 10-year average (2013–22) for the same period is 30,152 wildfires and 2,865,583 acres burned.
