US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for October 2

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that as of Friday, October 2, eight large fires are actively burning across the country.
The National Fire Preparedness Level remains at 2 out of 5. A total of 4,093 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents, including 65 crews, 119 engines, and 26 helicopters. Large wildfires are being reported in Southern California, the Pacific Northwest, and Southern geographic areas.
The National Interagency Coordination Center’s Predictive Services office released significant wildland fire potential outlooks for October through January 2027. Based on current forecasts, significant fire potential is expected to linger longest in the Southern geographic area, between eastern Texas and Kentucky, and Puerto Rico.

As of Friday, there are eight large wildfires ongoing. None are partially contained. California and Washington each have three active large fires, while Oregon has two.
The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:
- Year-to-date through October 2, 62,738 wildfires reported, burning 9,000,619 acres.
- During the same period last year, 53,319 wildfires reported, burning 4,692,890 acres.
- The 10-year average (2016–25) for the same period is 46,638 wildfires and 6,106,514 acres burned.
