Deal Pending to Reopen Domtar’s Howe Sound Pulp Mill
Deal reached to reopen shuttered Howe Sound pulp mill, union says
A deal is pending to reopen Domtar’s shuttered Howe Sound Pulp and Paper mill later this month, CBC reported (10-1-26).
Unifor said an agreement between British Columbia and Domtar has the mill poised to restart if union members ratify a new collective agreement next week.
Domtar announced in August that it was indefinitely shutting the Howe Sound mill, citing weaker demand, low prices, and insufficient fiber availability.
Unifor National President Lana Payne called the planned reopening “terrific news” for union members and the Sunshine Coast community. She also credited “close collaboration” between the government, workers, and industry. The Truck Loggers Association said it was “encouraged by the news” that the Port Mellon mill is expected to restart later this month.
