Marks Lumber to Close Clancy, MT, Sawmill in 2027
Marks Lumber, a family-owned sawmill in Clancy, Montana, announced that it will cease operations in 2027 after more than 75 years in business, The Missoulan reported (10-5-26).
Owner Steve Marks has operated the business for 37 years after taking over the sawmill in the 1980s. The mill produces specialty timbers, rough-sawn boards, circle-sawn flooring, and custom frames, primarily from Douglas fir.
Marks said he had hoped to continue milling until age 70 but cited a desire to spend more time with his five grandchildren. Higher costs and timber-industry lawsuits also contributed to the decision to wind down operations.
The mill will stop accepting special-cut orders on October 20 and end sawing operations on November 6. Most employees will be laid off after November, with four workers remaining as the company sells its remaining inventory through 2027.
