US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for July 6
National Fire News: July 7, 2026
The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that as of Monday, July 6, 35 large fires are actively burning across the country, with 3 new large fires reported. On Sunday, July 5, 274 new fires were reported nationwide, a notable increase in initial attack activity from recent days.
The National Fire Preparedness Level increased to 4 out of 5 as of June 29. Evacuations are in place on fires in three geographic areas.
Wildland firefighters continue to face challenging conditions on multiple fronts. NIFC reported two active fuels and fire behavior advisories covering the West Slope, Front Range, and southeast Colorado; southern Wyoming; eastern Nevada; Utah; and the Arizona Strip. Residents, travelers, firefighters, and support personnel in these areas should be aware of critically dry fuels and the potential for rapidly changing fire conditions.

As of Monday, there are 35 large wildfires or emergency responses ongoing, covering 529,468 acres. Only 2 are contained.
Alaska leads with 8 active fires; Utah has 5; Colorado has 4; Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming have 3 each; Montana, Oregon, and Washington have 2 each; and Arizona, Idaho, and North Carolina have 1 each.
The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:
- Year-to-date through July 6, 37,209 wildfires have been reported, burning 3,330,901 acres.
- During the same period last year, 36,156 wildfires were reported, burning 2,098,727 acres.
