After Hurricane Fiona’s Destruction, Prince Edward Island Government Addresses Needs of Private Woodlot Owners and Forest Industry
Environment minister strikes emergency forestry task force
On Friday (10-28-22), the province of Prince Edward Island (PEI) announced that in the wake of Hurricane Fiona’s unprecedented impact, the government has formed a task force to address the immediate needs of private woodlot owners and the forestry industry.
According to PEI Environmental, Energy, and Climate Action Minister Steven Myers, the PEI’s Emergency Forest Task Force (EFTF) will be comprised of PEI Forest, Fish, and Wildlife Division, the PEI Woodlot Owners Associations, L’Nuey Island Nature Trust, forest contractors, and other local experts. Meetings are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, November 1st.
With a salvage value window of two years or less, the EFTF will be asked to advise on work needed, private sector capacity to their work done and ways the government can help in the immediate term.
“While this task force will advise government on the immediate needs in this sector, we have not lost sight of the need for longer-term planning. Government is also developing a plan to work with partners on forest recovery for the province,” Myers concluded.
