Red Stag Opens Southern Hemisphere’s First Offsite Production Line Using CLT

On Friday, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon attended the opening of what Red Stag says is the Southern Hemisphere’s first offsite production line to use CLT, Wood Central reported (7-31-26).

The VoMo factory in Rotorua has 150 modular orders in hand and can produce up to 800 units annually, according to Red Stag. German architectural firm NKBAK and Austrian construction company Kaufmann Bausysteme partnered on the line, which is backed by New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries Primary Sector Growth Fund.

“These factories are proving highly effective in Austria and Germany,” Red Stag Group Chief Executive Marty Verry said. The system completes the full interior fit-out of each room-sized module before it leaves the production line. Verry said the resulting efficiencies cover factory operating costs and transportation to building sites.

Red Stag said the factory can shorten construction schedules by one-third to one-half by allowing foundations to proceed onsite while modules are assembled indoors. Verry also said factory production can reduce project contingencies from 10% to 5%, limit variations, and lower holding costs by allowing buildings to open sooner.

Red Stag said CLT modules could support buildings of 10–20 stories. The company is targeting classroom blocks, apartments, townhouses, cabins, hotels, student accommodations, offices, and retirement care facilities.
